The number of environment-friendly, “green” RMG factories is on the rise in Bangladesh, revolutionizing the country’s apparel industry and slowly uplifting its downward reputation in the world.
Since 2011, a total of 85 Bangladeshi RMG factories have received Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification from the US Green Building Council (USGBC), one of the top green building rating systems in the world.
The LEED certification from the USGBC is a point-based system, where the rating is awarded once the project meets all the prerequisites. Depending on the number of points earned, the project may be labeled as LEED-certified, LEED Silver, LEED Gold or LEED Platinum.
Among the certified factories, 23 are platinum, 53 are gold, seven are silver while the other two are green certified.
UHM Limited proudly boasts about being among the 13 platinum certified factories which were recently awarded. The apparel factory located in the Adamjee EPZ in Narayanganj, houses almost 2,100 employees, all working under the same roof that vows to be environment-friendly.
