Hefazat mayhem: Fugitive accused of arson, vandalism arrested in Rangamati

Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested an activist of Hefazat-e-Islam, a fugitive accused in a case filed over the arson attack in Dhaka during Hefazat’s hartal on March 28, from Amtoli in Baghaichhari upazila of Rangamati district early Saturday.

Tipped off, a team of RAB, led by Lieutenant Commander Golam Mirza, conducted a drive at Kabirpur Boro Madrasa in the Amtoli area and arrested one Hasan Imam, said Anwar Hossain Khan, officer-in-charge of Baghaichhari police station.

The arrestee was seen setting fire to and vandalizing a number of vehicles while riding on a horse in Dhaka during Hefazat’s daylong hartal, said police.

He went into hiding after the incident, said police.

Shariful Islam, Baghaichhari Upazila Nirbahi Officer, said Kabirpur Boro Madrasa is operating illegally and necessary steps will be taken against it soon.
