Covid-19: Daily cases rise above 1,000 again

Bangladesh records 1,212 Covid-19 cases and 25 deaths in 24 hours

Bangladesh recorded 1,212 Covid-19 cases and 25 deaths between 8am on Sunday and 8am on Monday.

In the last two days the daily caseload was below the 1,000 mark, with 980 cases recorded on Sunday and 818 cases on Saturday.

During the 24 hours till Monday morning, some 1,202 Covid-19 patients also recovered from the disease, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

The latest additions took the country’s total Covid-19 death toll to 27,439, the total caseload to 1,552,563 and the total number of recoveries to 1,512,681.

As many as 27,787 samples were tested at 821 labs around the country in the 24 hours to Monday morning, yielding a positivity rate of 4.36%. The overall infection rate in the country stands at 16.09%.

The seven-day moving average of single-day deaths in Bangladesh stood at 27 on Monday.

Dhaka counted nine deaths, the highest among the eight divisions, followed by Chittagong with eight fatalities.

Three deaths were reported in Sylhet, three in Khulna, and two in Mymensingh.

All 25 of them died at different hospitals across the country.

Of the new patients, Dhaka logged 920 cases, the highest among the divisions, followed by Chittagong with 93.

Meanwhile, the latest figures have put the recovery rate at 97.43% and the mortality rate at 1.77%.

Around 24.19 million people in the country have received their first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine. Of them, some 16.03 million have taken both doses, the latest DGHS data show.

Bangladesh reported its first three cases of Covid-19, a severe acute respiratory illness caused by a strain of coronavirus later named Sars-CoV-2, on March 8 last year. The first death was reported 10 days later.

The fast-spreading coronavirus has so far claimed over 4.76 million lives and infected more than 232.67 million people throughout the world, according to Worldometer.

More than 209.314 million people have recovered from the disease, which has affected 221 countries and territories across the planet.
