Collaborative efforts are on to inoculate those living in the country’s biggest brothel
The local administration and health department in Rajbari has started vaccinating those living in the country’s biggest brothel in Daulatdia for Covid-19.
The program was inaugurated at the local Public Health Centre on Wednesday.
About 1,500 sex workers, as well as people from various other occupations, will be brought under the nationwide mass vaccination campaign, local health officials said.
There lies an extreme risk of widespread coronavirus infections among those living in the vast warren of shacks.
However, the population remain quite unaware of the dire consequences of contracting Covid-19 and so they do not follow any restriction guidelines.
As mass vaccination drives continue all over the country, there was no response from the residents of the Daulatdia brothel -- leading the local administration and the health services directorate to make special arrangements to vaccinate the community.
Camps have been set up right next to the brothel to vaccinate the people of the community.
Various non-government development organizations are collaborating with the local authorities to organize this campaign.
Goalanda Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO Azizul Haque Khan said: “The risk of coronavirus infection in the brothels at Daulatdia is higher than any other place.
“The area is very densely populated and thousands of people visit the brothel every day. Also, residents of Daulatia are very much unaware of the risks of Covid-19 infections.”
“Hopefully, this initiative will help vaccinate most of those living there," he added.
