Daily Covid-19 cases drop below 1,000 after nine weeks

26 new deaths reported, the lowest in a single day since March 24

Case count and deaths from coronavirus are falling in Bangladesh with the daily new infections dropping below 1,000 after nine weeks.

In the 24 hours to Friday morning, 848 new cases were reported, taking the tally so far to 779,535, according to figures released by the health authorities.

It’s the first time the single-day tally has gone below the 1,000-mark since March 9, when 912 infections were reported.

The daily deaths have fallen to 26, dropping below 30 for the first time since March 24, when 25 fatalities were reported. On Thursday, 31 people died of Covid-19, the lowest in seven weeks.

As of Friday, the death toll stands at 12,102, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

On the other hand, another 852 patients recovered from Covid-19 through treatment at home and in hospital care.

Of the 26 deceased — 19 men and seven women — nine were from Dhaka Division, seven from Chittagong, three each from Khulna and Rangpur and two each from Rajshahi and Sylhet.

All of them died at different hospitals in the country.

So far, 8,762 men (72.40%) and 3,340 women (27.60%) have died of Covid-19 across the country.

The mortality rate against the total number of cases detected currently stands at 1.55%.

The DGHS said 7,567 samples were collected from suspected Covid-19 patients in the 24-hour time frame.

As many as 7,835 samples, including some pending ones, were tested at 459 authorized labs — government and private — across the country and 848 new patients were confirmed.

The latest figures showed an infection rate of 10.82%.

To date, 5,698,528 tests have been conducted in the country, leading to an overall infection rate of 13.68%.

Up to this point, 720,471 patients — 92.42% of all infected — have recovered from Covid-19 across the country.

On March 8, 2020, health authorities in Bangladesh reported the first three cases of Covid-19, a severe acute respiratory illness caused by a new coronavirus strain which was later named Sars-CoV-2.

The novel coronavirus broke out in China's Wuhan city in late December in 2019 and quickly spread throughout the world, becoming a pandemic in less than three months.

The fast-spreading coronavirus has claimed 3,360,222 lives and infected 161,881,248 people across the world till Friday afternoon, according to Worldometer, a reference website that provides counters and real-time statistics for diverse topics.

As many as 139,717,105 people have recovered from Covid-19 which has affected 222 countries and territories across the planet.
