Covid-19: Bangladesh records highest single-day toll with 112 deaths

Another 4,271 people infected over 24 hours

Bangladesh has recorded the highest ever deaths yet again for the fourth consecutive day with 112 deaths over the span of 24 hours.

At the same time, another 4,271 people have been infected taking the total number of cases in the country to 723,221.

The latest figures were published by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) via a press release on Monday.

With the updated data, the death toll in the country currently stands at 10,497.

Over the last four days, the single-day death toll was above the 100-mark with 101 deaths on Friday and Saturday, and 102 deaths on Sunday.


And, over the last week, Bangladesh recorded on average 96 deaths per day.

Of the 112 deceased between Sunday and Monday, 37 were female and 75 were male. Of them, 108 patients died in hospitals, three at home and one was pronounced dead on arrival when brought to a hospital.

In Dhaka division, 71 deaths were recorded over the last 24 hours. Nineteen died in Chittagong division, 10 in Khulna, five in Rajshahi, three in Sylhet, two in Rangpur, and one each in Barisal and Mymensingh divisions.

Sixty-four of the deceased patients were aged above 60, 26 between 51-60, 12 between 41-50, and 10 aged between 31-40.

The day’s infection rate stood at 17.68%, the overall mortality rate remained at 1.45%, and the recovery rate at 85.91%.

In the last 24 hours, 24,152 tests were conducted across 260 centres, and 24,212 Covid-19 samples were collected.

Another 6,364 people recovered from the virus, taking the total recoveries to 621,300.

On Monday, another 15,048 people got the first dose, taking the total number of first doses to 5,714,090. While 214,842 got the second dose during the same time, taking the total vaccinated to 1,366,609.

On March 8, health authorities in Bangladesh reported the first three cases of Covid-19, a severe acute respiratory illness caused by a new coronavirus named Sars-CoV-2.

The novel coronavirus broke out in China's Wuhan city in late December, 2019, and quickly spread throughout the world, becoming a pandemic in less than three months.

The fast-spreading coronavirus had claimed 3,035,128 lives and infected 142,111,430 people across the world till Monday afternoon, according to Worldometer.

As many as 120,663,016 people have recovered from Covid-19, which has spread to 219 countries and territories across the planet.
