Shopping malls may stay open till 7pm

Ongoing restrictions on public movement and limited operation of offices and public transport while following health guidelines have been extended till August 3.

The Cabinet Division issued a gazette notification in this regard on Tuesday night.

According to the notification, only severely infected areas (red zones) will be put in lockdown as per the zonal containment strategy. The authorities will ensure availability of the necessary services, including health services and food, in lockdown areas.

“Shopping hours have extended as per the new notice. Shopping malls and shops can be kept open from 10am-7pm, instead of from 10am -4pm, from July 1 to August 3,” said notification.

Forhad Hossain, state minister of the Ministry of the Public Administration, said: “Offices are operating in a limited manner currently, which will continue until August 3.”

Earlier, the government extended the shutdown of educational institutions until August 6.

According to the notice, public movement will remain prohibited from 10pm to 5am. No one will be allowed to leave their homes except in case of emergencies.

Wearing of masks outdoors also remains mandatory, and failure to do so will result in legal action. The directives also urged citizens to follow other health guidelines.

Currently, the government allows only 25% of its staff at each office and is following a roster. Limited operation of public transport including busses, trains and launches also resumed with the relaxing of restrictions on June 1.

Earlier on March 26, the government declared general holidays for 10 days to ensure social distancing amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

Later, the holiday was extended to April 25, May 5, and then May 30 as the number of cases and deaths from Covid-19 in the country continues to rise.
