He was tested with the rapid testing kit invented by Gonoshasthaya Kendra
Gonoshasthaya Kendra founder Dr Zafrullah Chowdhury has tested positive for Covid-19, the novel coronavirus disease that has killed over 500 people so far in the country.
He himself confirmed the matter to reporters on Monday when they reached him for comments.
Dr Zafrullah had a high fever on Sunday evening and decided to get tested for Covid-19. He was tested with the GR Covid-19 Dot Blot, a rapid testing kits recently invented by Gonoshasthaya Kendra.
He said: “I underwent the antigen test with our kit and the result came back positive. I will also undergo an antibody test on Tuesday.”
Dr Zafrullah said he was currently in isolation in a room at his Dhanmondi residence.
Gonosasthaya Kendra was scheduled to begin a clinical trial of its testing kit on Tuesday.
But the Directorate General of Drug Administration asked the organization to halt the testing in a letter issued on Monday.
Regarding his own test, Dr Zafrullah said: “We have done hundreds of tests in our lab as a part of our internal testing. My test was also a part of it.”
About their kits not being approved by the government, he said: “My test was done in our lab. The government has barred us from running clinical trials, but we can continue our own internal tests.”
Asked whether he will go for Covid-19 testing in state-run testing facilities, he said: “Why would I do that? There is no need. Thousands of people are going from one place to the other to get tested.
“If I did that my physical condition will deteriorate and I may even contract more diseases from the places I would visit.”
He said: “I have to go for dialysis every week, I will take special measures for that.”
No one from the government has contacted him as of 9:15pm on Monday, he informed.
