A senior public servant, who was on post-retirement leave (PRL), died after being infected with Covid-19.
Toufiqul Alam, who retired as an additional secretary, died at 10am on Friday at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), said its Director AKM Nasir.
Alam, who served as the secretary to the Information Commission, was admitted to the hospital in the first week of this month, soon after the DMCH opened a dedicated facility for Covid-19 patients at its burns unit.
He was moved out from the Covid-19 unit as his condition improved, but was taken to the Covid-19 unit’s ICU as his condition worsened, where died on Friday.
Alam, was infected by the virus while on PRL after serving the Information Commission as its secretary for almost a year, the commission’s Director (Research) Dr. Md Abdul Hakim said.
In separate statements, Information Minister Hasan Mahmud and Chief Information Commissioner Martuza Ahmed have expressed shock over the death and conveyed their sympathies to the bereaved family.
