The prisoners and prison guards of Dhaka Central Jail are being treated in three different hospitals
Jail authorities have stopped allowing prisoners to meet with relatives to prevent the spread of coronavirus as 21 prison guards and one prisoner of Dhaka Central Jail in Keraniganj have been infected with Covid-19.
They are being treated in three different hospitals.
Assistant Inspector General (AIG-Prison) Md Manzoor Hossain confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune on Wednesday.
He said among the coronavirus positive, one is a prisoner of the Central Jail and he is currently undergoing treatment at Mugda General Hospital.
The rest are 21 prison guards, the staff of Central Jail, they were on hospital duty in different hospitals including Dhaka Medical College Hospital and Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Hospital, he added.
Among the 21 prison guards, two are undergoing treatment at Jinjira 20-Bed Hospital, 10 at Mirpur Maternity Hospital, and nine at Mugda General Hospital, he further added.
Manzoor said that another 68 prisoners and prison guards are in quarantine.
Among them, 36 prison guards and 17 prisoners are from Dhaka division, one guard and one accountant in Sylhet division, one guard in Barisal division, and three guards and nine prisoners in Chittagong division.
He also said that visitation with relatives has been suspended in 68 jails in the country. The suspension came two weeks ago.
However, each prisoner is allowed to talk to relatives for five minutes on the mobile number assigned by the concerned jail. Visits to all prisons will be suspended until the Covid-19 situation returns to normal.
It is primarily suspected that the prison guards were infected during their hospital duty, he said.
The official also said that a total of 89,059 prisoners are in jail across the country till today, of which 85,512 are male and the rest 3547 female.
Disinfecting medicines are being sprayed daily in every ward and cells of all the 68 jails of the country. Hygiene and all rules and regulation regarding health are being maintained, he added.
In view of the Covid-19 situation, leave of all prison officials have been cancelled, Manzoor added.
