With more tests conducted every day, the number of cases has also increased since the beginning of April

The number of patients testing positive for Covid-19 in Bangladesh keeps skyrocketing, with already a mammoth 2,000% spike in the first two weeks of April.

Basically, a steady rise in the curve in the last three days till Tuesday massively contributed to the alarming upward trend of Covid-19 cases, the disease caused by the new strain of coronavirus SARS-CoV-2.

With more tests conducted every day, the number of cases has also increased since the beginning of April.

No fewer than 530 people were found to be infected by the virus over the period, accounting for more than 50% of the total count of 1,012 as of Tuesday.

Tuesday also marks the highest single day rise in infections (209) and highest single day death toll (7) since March 8, the day the country’s first coronavirus case was reported. The overall death toll now stands at 46, while only 42 cases of recovery have been recorded till date.

The latest count alone shockingly makes up a little over one-fifth of the tally of Covid-19 positive cases and more than one-sixth of the total death toll.

Covid-19 fatalities surge by eight times

On April 1, there was only one reported death and three fresh Covid-19 positive cases, amounting to a total of six fatalities and 54 patients till then.

The situation started worsening since April 6 when the country confirmed three Covid-19 casualties and 35 new infected patients.

The upward trend in the new cases witnessed a new high on April 9 as 112 people – the highest till then – tested positive for the virus anew. The number is more than double compared to the count (54) of a day earlier.

It is to be noted that in the period since March 8, there have been just 51 cases and five deaths in the country.

As criticism mounted over an acute shortage of testing kits, the government began to collect more samples and conduct more tests, expanding Covid-19 screening across the country from early this month.

The widened testing is helping detect more people infected with the virus, which has affected no fewer than 1,946,781 people, killing 121,710 globally till Tuesday.
