He is reportedly the first student from the institution to have contracted the disease
An under-graduate student of Dhaka University (DU) has tested positive for Covid-19, the deadly disease caused by a new strain of the coronavirus.
DU Proctor Prof AKM Golam Rabbani confirmed the matter on Sunday evening, and said the university authorities were in touch with the student -- who is reportedly the first from the institution to have contracted the disease.
He said: “The student on Sunday confirmed us about testing positive a few days ago. He is currently in isolation at his home.”
The youth is a student of population sciences department and a resident of the capital's Manikdi area, situated near Dhaka Cantonment.
The student told reporters that he tested positive for the disease on Wednesday, a day after going to the hospital as he was suffering from a number of issues that were similar to the symptoms of Covid-19 infection.
He said he has been in self-isolation at his home at Manikdi since Wednesday, when that area went under lockdown .
Capital Dhaka has become the biggest cluster for community transmission of the novel coronavirus over the past few weeks.
Since March 8, when the country's first three cases were reported, there have been 621 Covid-19 cases and 34 deaths around Bangladesh. Most of these victims were from Dhaka.
