A pilot Digital Healthcare and Micro Health Insurance program has been launched with the aim of ensuring healthcare and insurance services for 16,000 poor and extremely poor families as well as about 28,000 poor families of the Narayanganj City Corporation (NCC).
The program was inaugurated by chief guest and NCC Mayor Dr Selina Hayat Ivy at the Ali Ahmed Chunka Library and Auditorium yesterday. National Project Director and Joint Secretary of the Local Government Division Masum Patwari was the special guest.
A workshop was arranged on the occasion.
The Digital Healthcare and Micro Health Insurance program will run under the Livelihood Improvement of Urban Poor Communities Project supported by UK-Aid and UNDP.
The workshop was attended by Chairman of Life Insurance Corporation and former senior secretary Md Asadul Islam, Narayanganj District Civil Surgeon Dr AFM Mushiur Rahman and DDFP MD Anwar Hassan. About a hundred participants, including LIUPC project manager Yugesh Pradhanang and project officials, were present.
Mayor Ivy said: “Insurance activities have been declining for 20-25 years. At present, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is working to build a developed and prosperous country with all facilities for the poor. We also need to cooperate in this work from a responsible position.
“Despite the prime minister's initiative, those who are working under her supervision are not efficiently doing the work. As a result, the current generation is not well aware of the issue of insurance. The government wants to work hard on this. If it is made popular again, it is possible to serve the people,” she added.
Masum Patwari hoped that the Narayanganj City Corporation would play a pioneering role by successfully implementing the pilot project to serve as a model for other cities of the country.
