Four women are riding scooties across Bangladesh to visit all 64 districts

On Saturday afternoon, four girls on scooties crossed Barisal to end a six-day tour in the region to promote women’s empowerment.

Over the past four months, they have travelled to 21 districts on scooties. The trip was organized by a Facebook-based group – “Travelettes of Bangladesh” – consisting solely of women who love to travel. The trip is sponsored by Karnaphuli for their campaign to visit all 64 districts and see Bangladesh from the perspective of female travellers.

The campaign slogan is: “Empower women through travelling.”

The group initially comprised of five members - Dr Sakia Haque, founder-leader of the group, Dr Manoshi Saha Tuli, Zannatul Ferdous Shova, Shamsun Nahar Shuma, and Musfiqa Rahman Nijhum.

Because of pressing academic concerns, Nijhum was forced to drop out of the tour after visiting Patuakhali and Barguna.

The ladies reached Barisal on their scooties on August 31.

During their journey, they visited historical and coastal areas of Patuakhali, Barguna, Pirojpur, Jhalakathi, and Kuakata.

At the last leg of their Barisal tour, the group spoke to students from sixth and seventh grade at Halima Khatun Secondary School in Barisal.

Beethi, a sixth grader, said: “They helped us learn important facts about adolescence, the Liberation War, why early marriage should be prevented, nutrition, self-defence, etc.”

Dr Sakiya said: “Travelettes of Bangladesh is not just an ordinary online travel group, it is a platform for 18,000+ girls of Bangladesh.

“It promotes empowerment of women by teaching them to raise their voices, going out of their homes, speaking out, and seeing the beauty of the country through their own eyes,” she added.

After the tour ends, they plan on publishing a magazine to celebrate the first anniversary of the founding of the group.
