Five Bangladeshi students are to take part in a global robotic competition “First Global Challenge”, to be held in Mexico.

The group was selected by The Tech Academy, a social enterprise aiming to provide education on electronics, robotics, and programming to children and teenagers. The declaration was made at a press conference held at BRAC Inn Centre on Saturday.

This is the second time this group of tech enthusiastic teens – Anahita Anoara, Laleh Naz Bergman Hossain, Arman Khasru, Razeen Ali, and Sujoy Mahmud – are representing Bangladesh in the second annual robotics Olympics from August 15-18.

All the students are from or linked to Dhaka based schools. These students attend The Tech Academy after school. Shams Jaber, founder of the organization, will be the mentor for the Bangladesh team. “This is the second time The Tech Academy is taking part in the competition. They have sent us a box of parts and equipment to make a robot out of. Each country is to build a robot that is able to fuel power plants, initiate renewable energy plants, and house a resilient transmission network,” said Shams.

The box-shaped robot made by the Bangladesh Team is able to move around and has a lever that can pick up weights and drop them at the right place. It can also push small boxes from one place to another.

The competition will have 14 grand challenges, as identified by the United States of America’s National Academy of Engineering.

Team member Sujoy Mahmud said the robot can be installed for heavy weight lifting and moving as well.

Laleh Naz Bergman Hossain, team member of the Bangladesh team said that this year the team is more prepared. “This year we got three months to prepare ourselves unlike last year, when due to some problems, we did not get the materials on time. We were still in the top hundred after first round, so we are hopeful this time.”

Regarding the tasks in the competition, Anahita Anoara said that the team worked hard after school to get into this competition and they have a strategy for this.

The competition will be held at Arena Ciudad de Mexico in Mexico City. The Bangladesh Team tour is sponsored by Apex, Brac Bank, bKash, and Microsoft.
