How to measure if your neighbour is being too loud
Your neighbour’s speakers are on full blast. At least, it seems that way to you. You know you can call the police on them if it is loud enough. After all, the law states that the acceptable sound level is 55dB during daytime (6am to 9pm) and 45dB during nighttime (9pm to 6am) in residential areas. But you surely cannot tell if your neighbour is above the limit just with your ears. Thankfully, you need not rely on your ears to measure the noise level. This is the modern era; we have smart phone apps for that. There are apps which raise a red flag when users enter situations that reach noise levels high enough to contribute to hearing problems. The Dhaka Tribune tried out several free smart phone apps which could fulfill the need.

Decibel X

The iOS and android-supported app turns your smart phone into a pre-calibrated, accurate and easily portable sound level meter. It has a standard measurement range from 30 to 130dB and many features for measuring the intensity of sound around you built into a well-designed user interface.

Sound Meter

This android app has an interface featuring a colour-coded gauge to display sound intensity. It is a good auxiliary option for most uses. But the maximum decibel levels are limited by some devices, you may not be able to measure sounds over 90dB. But that should not be a deterrent. You need to be able to measure only up to 45dB to prove your neighbour’s misconduct.

NIOSH Sound Level Meter

This iOS-exclusive app was developed by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) in the United States. It is frequently used by researchers to collect data about noise exposure. Different apps may show different results for the same noise, due to their varying measurement methods and algorithm, but within acceptable limits. Performance may also vary depending on the smart phone.
