Nadera, the younger sister of martyred intellectual Munier Chowdhury and late national professor Kabir Chowdhury, was an ardent political activist of the Pakistan era

Pioneering political activist and language movement veteran Nadera Begum was remembered on her death anniversary on Saturday.

Nadera, the younger sister of martyred intellectual Munier Chowdhury and late national professor Kabir Chowdhury, was an ardent political activist of the Pakistan era.

While studying English literature at Dhaka University, she was at the forefront of the Language Movement, being among the handful of female students who took part.

At DU, she became a leftist activist and took on a leadership role at Communist Chhatra Shangha.

Along with Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, she was among the students who were expelled by the university for taking part in a movement to raise the wages of fourth class employees of the university.

Due to her role in the Language Movement, Nadera spent three years in jail.

She passed away at the age of 84, in 2013.
