Govt plans to purchase Novera Ahmed paintings
The Ministry of Cultural Affairs plans to purchase 10 paintings by the late sculptor Novera Ahmed to enrich the country’s treasure trove of culture. Asaduzzaman Noor, minister of cultural affairs, wrote a letter to Minister of Finance AMA Muhith, citing a cost of $47,000 or a little over Tk38 lakh for the acquisition. The cultural ministry requires an advance of $5,000 to book the 10 paintings, which are now with Novera’s husband Gregoire de Brouhns in Paris. The ministerial letter reads that the money could be disbursed from the Unexpected Budget Management Fund. The appropriation of the funds will require the prime minister’s approval. The finance mminister noted : “We are proud of sculptor Novera Ahmed. Her sculptures adorn our museums but we still have to get one of her paintings.” Novera Ahmed was an eminent sculptor from Bangladesh. One of the more prolific artists of her time, she was widely praised by her peers. Novera worked with Hamidur Rahman to design the Central Shaheed Minar. She was among the earliest sculptors in Bangladesh to adopt western influences and produced nearly 100 sculptures in Dhaka from 1956-1960. The government honoured her with the Ekushey Padak in 1997. Novera passed away in May 2015.
