Fortnite is free-to-play, is frequently updated, quite unlike PUBG
If you have not been living in the dark, you probably know of the rivalry between Fortnite and PUBG. PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, alias PUBG, is an online multiplayer battle royale game developed and published by PUBG Corporation, a subsidiary of South Korean video game company Bluehole, released on March 23, 2017. Fortnite is a co-op sandbox survival game developed by Epic Games and People Can Fly, and published by Epic Games, released on July 25, 2017. However, the similarity between Fortnite’s Battle Royale mode with PUBG sparked a bitter rivalry between the games.
PUBG soared in popularity after it was released last year, banking on its battle royale shooter genre which incredibly appealed to the masses. The popularity of PUBG led Epic Games to introduce its own battle royale mode in Fortnite, a shooter that now dominates Twitch streams and has become one of the most popular games on the planet.
Bluehole previously revealed it had “growing concerns” about the similarities between the two games, prompting PUBG Corporation to file a lawsuit against Epic Games in Korea, claiming to “protect copyright” in May 2018.
Both games can be won in a similar fashion – loot weapons and fight till you are the last player standing. Nevertheless, there are some differences. In terms of weapon variety, PUBG is definitely better off than Fortnite by a long shot. With a larger map and a military theme, players can use vehicles to move around the map in PUBG. PUBG intends to make new maps for the game.
On the other hand, Fortnite’s unique building aspect introduces new dynamics to the game. Fortnite has a relatively small map, with a cartoonish theme, to which they keep on making adjustments. Fortnite has a larger developer team, and its publisher has deep pockets, helping it perform far better compared to PUBG. Also, unlike PUBG, Fortnite is free to play. Profits from Fortnite are dependent on game cosmetics.
Both games are available on PC, Xbox, and iOS. But PUBG is also playable on Android phones, an aspect Fortnite has yet to catch up on. Both are frequently updated; however, PUBG updates have been slow in the recent months.
All in all, Fortnite and PUBG are different games under the same genre – but they appeal to players with different tastes.
Fortnite has 125 million players worldwide. Meanwhile, PUBG's player count has halved since January 2018. Nevertheless, this should not affect your game preference. They are both excellent games. Fortnite is better suited to casual players whereas PUBG is a better option for those who are looking for more shooting and a more serious experience.
