A professor was allegedly threatened for opposing a tender bill

Update : 13 Jan 2019, 12:58 AM

Jessore University of Science and Technology (JUST) faculty members have decided to boycott all classes and exams indefinitely in protest of an alleged threat given to their colleague.

The university teachers and officials gave the announcement from a human-chain protest on Saturday.

General Secretary of the Teachers’ Association Dr Md Nazmul Hasan confirmed the matter.

Professor Iqbal Kabir Zahid, also the president JUST Teachers’ Association, was allegedly threatened over phone by former district Chhatra League general secretary Awnar Hossain Bipul.

The teachers and officials at the human-chain demanded justice and punishment of students who insulted the faculty members of the university and snatched their microphones earlier.

Prof Iqbal said: “I was threatened as I opposed a bill through which low quality chairs and tables were given to Mashiur Rahman Hall. Probably Awnar is the one behind the tender and for that he threatened me.”

At the time of the human-chain, Sheikh Hasina Hall Chhatra League General Secretary Humaira Azmira led a procession and demanded the removal of Prof Iqbal.

When contacted, Awnar said he did not deliver any chairs or tables and accused Prof Iqbal of being a BNP-Jamaat supporter who was slandering Chhatra League.

In a press briefing, the university Vice Chancellor (VC) Dr Awnar Hosain said: “A protest procession was brought out by a Chhatra League female leader against a teacher which is not at all acceptable.

“On the other hand, the Chhatra League leader Anwar threatened one of our colleagues and used obscene words at him over phone which is very sad.”

“They also tore down posters which were posted at the campus with instructions given for not ragging students,” the VC said.
