Chini Masjid – a testament to communal harmony

Just outside the city of Saidpur of Nilphamari district, lies a stunning mosque - Chini Masjid. Also known as “glass mosque,” the establishment is heavily influenced by Mughal architecture, even though it was built in 1863. The two-storied mosque can house over 500 people during daily prayers. Both inner and outer walls are covered with colourful rocks and ceramic pieces. The walls are also decorated with motifs of flowers, leaves and stars and Islamic calligraphy. The name comes from the ceramics, commonly known as “China Mati”. The ceramic pieces were brought from Kolkata since there were no ceramic factories in Bangladesh during the time of its construction. Local folklore attributes a Hindu named “Shonku” as the mason of the mosque – which is a testament to the history of communal harmony in the region. Today, the mosque serves as an embodiment of our rich and diverse heritage
