While a recent study of National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) scientists argues that the earth is still experiencing a continuation of never-ending trends unlike the de facto rise in global temperatures, the latest modification of a 750HP “Middle-Mile” Electric Aircraft prototype (particularly known as Cessna Grand Caravan) certified by AeroTec until 2021 which had successfully accomplished its maiden flight in Moses Lake, Washington on May 28, 2020 sheds light on the essentially metaphysical question of nature. When other countries are still battling with the pandemic crisis, this is clearly a major action outplayed by USA and gives a strong message in front of the whole world.
This iconic project is designed and manufactured by a Seattle based Aerospace service provider, magniX.
The startup claims to be the sole manufacturer of two high-power density electric lightweight-motors like ‘magni250’ and ‘magni500’ in order to integrate and use them as propulsion mechanism (specially magni500 is designed for clean-sheet electrical aircraft prototype). The magni500 has been used in this eCaravan.
So far, the startup has also designed and successfully implemented a dynamic and advanced Power-Electronics solution that can be used as a tool to harness and provide additional flying redundancy and reliability in commercial aviation appliance like eCaravan.
From an Engineering mindset, what I believe is that this post prototypic idea of the Battery-Electric Aircraft can be a massive breakthrough in response to the unceasingly intense confusions encircling climate change and global warming.
Let’s see an ideal paradigm of thoughts in the following paragraphs, that exhibits a more buoyant reply.
Irrespective of the prolonged public dispute and tirade among some frontline quasi fascist world leaders on climatic fluctuations, it’s high time to rethink and act scientifically about climate change, biodiversity and the other environmental impacts since global pandemic like COVID-19 shoved the whole world unveiling the malfunctions of health care systems of several first world countries like USA, Spain, Italy, Switzerland, Turkey etc.
Can you imagine what would happen if you go outside and realize that your skin burns like a fresh steak of tuna inside a frying pan? If we consider the current worldwide situations, it’s quite an unmasked fact that we are somewhat resourceful to discover antiviral drugs, vaccines or antibiotics against plagues or pandemics which is yet a long-drawn-out process.
My greater point is what could be an exemplary approach of the first world countries to confront long-term and shocking heat waves, droughts, damaged ecosystem and wildlife? Do we have the guts to fight back in that time? Will we be able find any feasible remedy by that time? Even finding a safe refuge inside our own country would be crucial and yet unimaginable. I have a huge hunch, during that era, we will definitely regret losing intellects unlike Stephen Hawkins or Albert Einstein who showed the way towards building a time machine. Perhaps, we would wish for someone to befall upon us who can be replaced by these epitomes.
The impact of aircraft carbon dioxide emission has been monitored and estimated by several researchers and practitioners for over a decade. The contribution of carbon dioxide is estimated to represent 36% to 51% of the total aviation RF of climate including short-term climate forcers (Lee et al 2009, Grewe et al 2017, Karcher 2018).
Startups like magniX, which have a cluster of skillful individuals from members of Airbus, Astronics, Boeing, Bombardier, Embraer, Google-X, GE Aviation, Liebherr, P&W, SpaceX, Tesla and others leading the company into an envision of eco-friendly and green environment. This is not the end, they are also focusing on lower costs for operators and consumers.
A representative of this startup has unfolded that, these hi-tech mid eCaravans can be operated by spending just $6 costs (for electricity) worth of a perfect 30 minutes emission free flight that can carry four to five passengers within a distance of 100 miles. For a short regional travel, the new design is a “solid move” showing a feasible solution towards the revolution of climate change and also paving the way of sustainable development goals. Maybe, we would have to wait for a couple of more years for a longer travel until the next modification of these eCaravans takes place. Yet, until tomorrow, this is a new renaissance.
Regardless of the mess that COVID 19 left inside USA, this triumphant event of flying an electric eCaravan, that too being conducted by an all American startup teaches us that -- “Being challenged in life is inevitable, being defeated is optional.”
