Room to Read Bangladesh celebrates the International Day of Gild Child 2019

Room to Read Bangladesh, the Bangladesh chapter of the international NGO, celebrated International Day of the Girl Child 2019 with the theme ‘GirlForce: Unscripted and Unstoppable’ on November 12. The Deputy Minister for the Ministry of Education Mohibul Hassan Chowdhoury, MP attended the event as the chief guest. 

Professor Syed Md Golam Faruk, Director General, Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education Bangladesh, Lucky Enam, Chairman, Bangladesh Shishu Academy, Nazmun Nahar, the first woman to travel to 135 countries across the world with flag of Bangladesh, Bonna Mirza, a renowned actor and head of marketing at Bangla Tribune were present as special guests. The event was presided over by Rakhi Sarkar, Country Director, Room to Read Bangladesh.

In the welcome speech Rakhi Sarkar said that Room to Read has supported more than five thousand girls in the past 10 years in Bangladesh. Around 750 girls have completed secondary education and are in tertiary education. “We have stopped around 400 child marriages with the support from local government and other stakeholders. In the higher secondary exams, the success rate for Room to Read girls was 93.77%, which is higher than the national pass rate 66.64%” she said. 

Deputy Minister Mohibul Hassan Chowdhoury said it is pertinent to remove gender barriers. “Our honourable prime minister of Bangladesh is the example for women and girls when it comes to leadership and more. So, I say to the thousand girls present here – please do not just engage the world digitally; continue to read books made of paper, and realize your unscripted potential and unstoppable future.”

Professor Syed Md Golam Faruk said that to the government will run six projects alongside the academic curriculum in schools and from next year the projects will be extended. Apart from education the girl children also need proper nutrition. 

Lucky Enam stressed on the importance of stopping child marriage and dowry system. He called all stakeholders to work together. 

The first woman to travel to 135 countries across the world with flag of Bangladesh Nazmun Nahar shared her stories from across the globe. She motivated children and advised on how to dream, how to overcome barriers and think beyond limits.

Bonna Mirza emphasized on the roles of family and parents for promoting child education along with role of the state and schools. 

Room to Read is an International NGO working in 16 countries across the globe. Currently, under the Girls’ Education Program; Room to Read Bangladesh is supporting more than five thousand girls in 32 secondary schools in Dhaka, Natore and Sirajganj.
