A three-day long cultural program and fair was held to commemorate the 128th death anniversary of Fakir Lalon Shah at Chheuriya in Kushtia.

The death anniversary of the country’s most eminent figure of Baul tradition was jointly organized by the Ministry of Cultural Affiars and Lalon Academy. Awami League Joint General Secretary and Member of Parliament from Kushtia-3, Mahbub-ul-Alam Hanif inaugurated the ceremony on Tuesday morning.

Minister of Information, Hasanul Haq Inu was one of the special guests who gave a speech about the lifestyle of Lalon “Sahajiya,” in the opening ceremony.

The first day of the event witnessed thousands of Lalon devotees assembling on the bank of river Kaliganga at Chheuriya, where Lalon’s shrine is located. One of them was a Frenchwoman Deborah Cukirman who abandoned her luxurious life to become a disciple of the mystic legend Lalon.

The second day of the event was the centre of all attractions as people from all over the country visited the shrine only to be a part of this great musical festival.

Lalon’s humanitarian songs and discussions on his lifestyle by local artists and poets of Kumarkhali upazila was one of the main attractions for the second day of the program. Ardent followers of Lalon from across the country and Bauls from the Lalon Academy also enchanted the audience with their devotional performances.

Fakir Lalon Shah, who is considered to be one of the greatest spiritual inspirations of Bengali culture, left his body on the month of October in 1890 at the age of 116. Lalon left no written copies of his songs but many Bauls claim that he composed around 10,000 songs orally, which were later transcribed by his followers.
