The winning team’s representative Jainah is from Universiti Teknologi Mara of Malaysia, and her teammate Parth hails from the University of Delhi in India
IUB Ascension 2018 ended on Saturday at 9pm, with the main championship going to the composite team of Jainah and Parth Maniktala. The runners-up were Taylor’s University, and the other two teams who competed in the finals were Scholastica Mirpur and the host institution Independent University, Bangladesh.
The inter-school champion of IUB Ascension 2018 was the school representative team of Debate Network Nepal, an organization that is equivalent to Bangladeshi Debating Council. The runners up were Rajuk College. The other finalists of inter-school were Sunnydale and Manarat. The best speaker of the final was Ang Sonam Sherpa from Debate Network Nepal, and the best speaker among school debaters was Jubayer Ibn Hamid of Scholastica, Mirpur.
In the novice debater category the championship went to Khulna University. The runners-up were the Kathmandu University School of Law. The other finalists of the novice category were Dhaka University and Brihaspati Vidyasadan. The best novice speaker of the tournament was Aastha Malhotra from the West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences and the best speaker of the novice final was Anmon Rahman from Khulna University.
The runner-up of IUB Ascension 2018 open category was Amrit Agastia and Sher May from Taylor’s University, Malaysia. The other two teams in the final were Scholastica Mirpur- Kazi Fardeen Ishraq and Jubayer Ibn Hamid, and host institution Independent University, Bangladesh, whose debaters were United Asian Debating Champions Aaqib Farhan Hossain and Nabil Hasan. What the champion Parth Maniktala said about the tournament: “The first time I heard about Ascension was from my Bangladeshi friends. The first experience of Ascension was record-setting in terms of size, hospitality, the amount of sponsors involved and the quality of volunteers. Obviously they surpassed all that this year. I have never seen a tournament of this scale in India or elsewhere. The teams and the motions were remarkable. I am already awaiting the next Ascension.”
