Celebrity World Cup battles on social media

Update : 18 Jun 2018, 11:52 PM

After Bangladeshis' favourite teams Brazil and Argentina missed out on victories in their first matches in the Fifa World Cup 2018, even the country's celebrities reacted heatedly on social media.

Many celebrities posted remarks about their respective teams’ matches on their Facebook statuses, getting reactions and comments from hundreds of their fans.

After the draw scored by Brazil and Argentina, Chirkutt’s founder and vocalist Sharmin Sultana Sumi posted in Bangla: “Let’s assume Argentina was not good. If that is the case, then why wasn’t Brazil better?”

She was alluding to a famous quote from Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay’s “Kapalkundala,” while writing her status.

On the other hand, veteran actor Suborna Mustafa posted in Bangla: “Neymar! No point playing football on all fours, dear. You have become exhausted from trying to win fouls…”

However, celebrated director Mostofa Sarwar Farooki, who is a hard-core Brazil fan, posted: “While I feel sorry for Messi, I feel extremely happy for Iceland! They have proved ‘resilience is beautiful’!”

Even if Farooki is a Brazil fan, his wife Nusrat Imrose Tisha is a fan of Argentina. He uploaded a picture of the couple wearing their favourite teams’ jerseys on his Facebook profile.

These statuses have received hundreds of reactions and comments from fans, adding fuel to the battle of football fans that is raging on Facebook.
