The Marma people are the second-largest ethnic community in the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT)
Bandarban wears a festive look as the Marma ethnic community has begun their traditional Sangrai festival, marking the Bangla New Year 1425.
As part of the weeklong festival, the community brought out a colorful procession on Friday that marched through different streets in the district town.
Carrying banners and festoons, all including children and youths of the community joined the procession attended by State Minister for Chittagong Hill Tracts Bir Bahadur, Bandarban Deputy Commissioner Aslam Hossain, and Superintendent of Police Zakir Hossain.
Later in the day, adults and older people arranged a puja [an act of propitiation] at Rajar field in the town.
They will organize water fights today after bathing a statue of Lord Buddha in the Sangu river.
Water fights are a century-old traditional event. People of the community throw water at one another to symbolically cleanse everything that was old and weary and to purify their bodies and minds for the year ahead.
