Seminar on Re-Visiting Historical Records of South Asia held at ULAB

The seminar was enlightened by the live discussion, questions and answers of the eminent historians, archaeologists, social scientists, as well as ULAB faculties

The Center for Archaeological Studies (CAS) and the Department of General Education (GED) of the University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB) jointly organized a seminar titled Re-Visiting Historical Records of South Asia on Sunday.

The seminar was held at 11:30am at ULAB's Main Campus in Mohammadpur of the capital, reads a press release. 

The seminar commenced with a welcome speech by the Vice Chancellor of ULAB Professor Imran Rahman.

In his speech, he highlighted the activities of the ULAB's Center for Archaeological Studies (CAS) as well as the significance of epigraphy, a primary tool of archaeology, for the reconstruction of history. 

Professor of the Department of Ancient Indian History & Culture, University of Calcutta Dr Susmita Basu Majumdar delivered a lecture titled Interrogating Mauryan and Contemporary Records in the seminar. 

In her lecture, she brings to light the character of the Mauryan empire, for example the emperor Ashoka and its policies, thoughts including its relation with the other regions by analyzing selected inscriptions from the eastern sector of the Mauryan territory including Mahasthan stone inscription. 

The second speaker Associate Professor and the Head of the Department of Ancient Indian History & Culture, University of Calcutta Dr Sayantani Pal discussed on Epigraphy as text based on the BD Chattopadhyaya's book on Early Mediaeval Rural settlements and Society.

Professor of History and the former Vice Chancellor of the National University, Bangladesh Dr Abdul Momin Chowdhury delivered his valuable remarks on the contribution of historians of sub-continent by mentioning the very point in 3rd century BC the idea of democracy, welfare state been discussed in those Ashokan inscription at the seminar.

The seminar was enlightened by the live discussion, questions and answers of the eminent historians, archaeologists, social scientists, as well as ULAB faculties and students participating in the seminar. 

Finally, Professor of Archaeology, Head of the Department of General Education (GED) and the Director of the Center for Archaeological Studies (CAS), University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB) Dr Shahnaj Husne Jahan concluded the seminar.
