‘The Kohinoor is the capital which Afghanistan is built on’
Unless one is a history buff, getting up early and beating the traffic to attend what is essentially one long history class wouldn’t seem like an exciting prospect. In the hands of William Dalrymple, however, the panel titled “The Story of the Kohinoor” was transformed into an electrifying journey through time. The author, who was introduced to the stage by DLF director Sadaf Saaz, wove myth, art, and not more than a few cheeky pop culture references into the history of the Kohinoor, the A-lister in the world of South Asian gemology. Starting with the story of the curse of the flawed diamond, to the story of the hands it passed through, to the states it created, including Afghanistan, wrapping up at a gristly spectacle of death to rival (or inspire) any climactic Game of Thrones episode, Dalrymple had the hall packed on the final day of the Dhaka Lit Fest.
