The county's bourses, Dhaka and Chittagong Stock Exchanges, have extended their ongoing closure till April 14, in accordance with extended public holidays declared by the government.

The bourses declared their decisions to keep stock markets closed in separate statements on Sunday.

The statements said that their activities will remain closed till April 14, mirroring the government shutdown.

Earlier, the bourses announced the closure of all activities from March 26 to April 4. Afterwards, the closure was extended to April 11.

The government issued a circular on Sunday, extending the general holiday for all public and private offices to April 14.

The Public Administration Ministry said the holiday has been extended for two days, April 12 and 13, to help prevent the spread of coronavirus in the country and encourage people to be at home and maintain social distancing.

Earlier on March 26, the government first introduced a 10 day shutdown till April 4, which was later extended till April 11.

The benchmark index of the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) lost 683 points between March 8 and March 18, wiping out market capitalization of Tk44,000 crore in seven days of trading, following the first confirmed case of coronavirus infection in the country on March 8.

To tackle the free-fall of stocks prices, Dhaka and Chittagong Stock Exchange cut trading hours by one hour on March 18.
