Stocks post sharp losses

Blue-chip index, DS30 went down by -2.54% to close at 1,605.8 points while Shariah based index DSES declined -2.43% to end at 1,055.8 points

Indices witnessed sharp losses last week amid steady turnover.

The benchmark index of Dhaka Stock Exchange, DSEX closed at 4,671.3 points on Thursday after losing -1.27% during the week while the broad index of Chittagong Stock Exchange, CASPI declined -1.31% to close at 14,203.3 points.

Blue-chip index, DS30 went down by -2.54% to close at 1,605.8 points while Shariah based index DSES declined -2.43% to end at 1,055.8 points. 

Turnover stood at Tk462.2 crore on average in each session of the week which was Tk475.2 crore in the previous week. 

Among major sectors, general insurance sector contributed 16% of the total turnover while banking, textile and pharmaceutical sectors contributed 15.2%, 12.1% and 8.9% respectively, showed the weekly market analysis of UCB Capital Management Ltd. 

Sector-wise returns were mixed last week, according to the weekly market analysis. Among prominent sectors, telecom stocks declined -3.5% while general insurance stocks gained 2.2%. 

LafargeHolcim Bangladesh Ltd secured the leadership position on the top turnover chart for the week with a turnover of Tk75.2 crore with its share price closing at Tk36.2 per share. The stock was followed by Sonar Bangla Insurance Ltd with Tk59.5 crore, Paramount Insurance Company Ltd with Tk50.7 crore, Fortune Shoes Ltd with Tk45.7 crore and SK Trims & Industries Ltd with Tk44.8 crore. 

Paramount Insurance Company Ltd secured the highest gain of 38.4% during the week followed by Zaheen Spinning Ltd with 28.8%, Samata Leather Complex Ltd with 19.7%, Prime Finance First Mutual Fund with 18.8% and Prime Insurance Company Ltd with 16.6%. 

Stylecraft Ltd secured the highest gain of -56.2% during the week followed by ACI Ltd with -19.6%, Queen South Textile Mills Ltd with -17.2%, Progressive Life Insurance Co Ltd with -16.6% and Bangas Ltd -16%. 

Among the traded issues 140 gained, 194 declined and 21 remained unchanged during the week in Dhaka Stock Exchange while 128 gained, 157 declined and 19 remained unchanged in Chittagong Stock Exchange. 

The Dhaka Stock Exchange currently has a market capitalization of Tk352,375  crore with the benchmark index, DSEX down by -13.26% since the beginning of this year.
