The association of RMG manufacturers said 10% factory owners have paid wages for the month of May
The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), on Thursday, said all their member factories have paid out festival bonuses and salaries for the month of May to their workers.
Speaking at a press conference on the labour situation in the export-oriented RMG industry ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr, , BGMEA President M Siddiqur Rahman said: “As far as we know, about 100% RMG factory owners have paid festival bonuses on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr, while 100% factory owners have paid wages for the month of May 2018.”
“As of yesterday [Wednesday], 90% factories declared holidays for the festival season and the rest will do it today (Thursday). From different agencies, we have learned that some factories may face trouble in paying salaries for the month of May and festival bonuses ahead of Eid, and the BGMEA brought 1,200 of those factories under close monitoring.”
Siddiqur went on to say that of these factories, 35 had problems regarding funds to pay the due bonuses and wages. “In cooperation with the federation, owners, and workers, we have taken steps so that the owners can get funds from the bank and pay the workers in time.”
“We have managed to solve these issues with everyone’s help and as of today (Thursday), these factories have to ensure payment to their workers,” he assured.
However, trade union leaders claimed some Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) member factories have yet to pay workers their bonuses.
“The workers of BGMEA member factories are happy as they have been given wages and festival bonuses. But some e BKMEA factory owners have yet to pay that,” said Sirajul Islam Rony, president of the Bangladesh National Garment Workers Employees League.
Talking to Dhaka Tribune about these allegations, (BKMEA) president AKM Salim Osman said: “Our members factories have paid the due wages for the month of May. There is no problem regarding the payment of festival allowances and workers are leaving for their Eid vacation with payment in hand,” he added.
