Almost all physical aspects in the world require a bit of maintenance from time to time. A gadget needs to be cleaned every now and then or parts of it need to be replaced – even our bodies become ill or hurt and need to be taken care of. So why should buildings be any different? Buildings, be it residential or commercial, oddly enough have a lot of moving parts with continuous usage – water pipes, lifts, fittings. Over time and with excessive usage, they lose efficiency or completely break down. That is when it is time to call in experts to repair those worn down or broken items. However, finding a reliable maintenance service can be hard to come by sometimes, even in bustling cities. That is because not all areas have an equal number of maintenance service providers.
Cities all over tend to have “zones” where specific trade providers cluster together – the same goes for home maintenance experts. This allows service seekers to easily find their necessary trade holders as well as provide multiple options. However, these zones are usually located in the busiest parts of the city that have lots of shops and bazaars. For example, Rampura bazar, Nawabpur bazar, Mirpur 10 – these places in Dhaka have an assortment of maintenance service providers available. Although, even the local smaller area bazaars can be a great place to find required service providers, albeit, in lesser numbers. Still, there are more than a couple of trade holders for all sorts of repairs and maintenance. As a result, there are alternate options to choose from and the option exists to replace a “bad” maintenance service provider with something or someone better.

Almost all of the residential areas – be it a major area such as Bashundhara R/A or the much smaller Chayabithi of Basabo – usually have one or two maintenance service providers for each aspect, i.e. gas, electricity, repairmen. So the residents of those areas are almost always forced to take these services, regardless of their quality, unless outside people from farther areas are brought it. However, that can be both time-consuming and more expensive than availing the services of local “repairmen” – a compromise many are willing to make if necessary. But even then, this option is not always available since the local service providers can sometimes be territorial. So the end result is a sort of monopoly where the inhabitants of these residential areas have no alternative to turn to. But in all fairness, such an extreme scenario is rare and residents can call upon service providers from other areas.
People are making the best use of this by availing maintenance services from online portals and apps. A number of apps and websites offering an assortment of professional services launched in the last few years. These online services are a part of the ongoing digital revolution in Bangladesh. On paper, these online maintenance services are more easily accessible and convenient – and to some extent, they are successful at it. If the situation allows, residents are using these apps to request necessary services, thus, freeing them from the confines and limitations of the closest maintenance provider. However, the common consensus, at the moment, is that repeated usage of such online services can pile up quite a bill. That is why many are unwilling to keep this as their foremost option when it comes to repairs and maintenance.
All in all, the maintenance and repair service industry has remained unchanged in Bangladesh for a while now with online services being the exception. The concept is still relatively unfamiliar and new to the citizens and it may be a while before everyone is more used to it. Until then, the best places to find quality maintenance service providers for homes and buildings are still local bazaars where the density of such trade holders are the highest.
