Separate lanes, directional signals on highways to improve road safety

Government plans to create a pool of skilled drivers

The government has taken steps to build separate lanes for slow moving vehicles on highways.  

Steps have also been taken to build a safe, environment-friendly, and modern IT based road transport and control system.

"We have identified 121 black spots on the highways, and taken preventive steps," said the budget proposal speech in parliament, for the 2019-20 fiscal year budget. 

"A plan has been undertaken to install directional signals and kilometre posts at 8,100 spots," it said.

Measures have been taken to create a pool of skilled drivers, as part of improving road safety. Apart from this initiative, mass awareness programs like seminars and the distribution of stickers and leaflets is ongoing.

Four automated vehicle inspection centres have been set up in Dhaka, Chittagong, Rajshahi, and Khulna divisions, which will be expanded to district headquarters gradually. 

Meanwhile steps have been taken to set up vehicle inspection centres in 17 districts. An electronic toll collection system has also been introduced for the Meghna Bridge.
