Budget FY19: Rooppur nuclear plant receives highest allocation among mega projects

10 mega projects get Tk40,000 crore in total

The government is implementing ten mega projects which are being allocated Tk40,000 crore in the proposed 2018-19 fiscal year budget.

The projects are getting top priority which could strengthen country's communication network and develop the power and energy sector to boost the economy.

Among the 10 projects, seven are in the implementation stage right now. They will receive a total of Tk40,000 crore in the budget proposal, a rise of Tk6,500 crore from the current budget. 

Of these, the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant will be allocated Tk20,050 crore which is the highest allocation for a single project and over half of the available funds.

Finance Minister AMA Muhith said: “The implementation of mega project like Padma Bridge with our own finances has upheld our image globally.”

“Half of the work of Padma Bridge has already been completed including the successful installation of four spans,” he added. 

“These 10 growth-generating large projects, identified as ‘Mega Projects’, have been brought under special supervision of the prime minister for rapid implementation,” said the minister during the budget speech in parliament on Thursday. 

“A high powered, ‘Fast Track Monitoring Committee,’ headed by prime minister has been formed for close monitoring of these projects. On the other hand, a ‘FastTrack Taskforce’ has been formed headed by Principal Secretary, Prime Minister’s Office for monitoring,” he added.
