RMG workers block Elephant Road for outstanding salaries
Readymade garments (RMG) factory workers have blocked Elephant Road in Dhaka, demanding two months’ salaries outstanding fearing shutdown of the factory. The workers of Fashion Network Limited blocked the road since Thursday morning, disrupting vehicular movement in the areas connecting through Elephant Road. Meanwhile, the commuters were forced to pass on foot due to the road block. “Eid is close and we cannot find any job in other factories now. We want the owner to pay us two months’ dues and two more months’ salaries as lay off compensation,” said worker Kamrul Islam. The workers also claimed that the owner said the matter will be taken care of by the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA). New Market police station Officer-in-Charge Atiqur Rahman told the Dhaka Tribune: “The workers claimed that the owner was shutting down the factory and subcontracting all the deals ahead of Eid. “We are trying to bring the situation under control.” Fashion Network Limited managing director Syed Shahjahan Ali Jewel said they were moving their factory elsewhere.
