New notes will be disbursed from 20 counters of 19 commercial banks in Dhaka

The central bank has scheduled the release of new currency notes in the market ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr.

New notes of Tk10, Tk20, Tk50, and Tk100 will be distributed from June 3 to 14, confirmed Bangladesh Bank’s Communications and Publications department General Manager GM Abul Kalam Azad.

According to sources at the central bank, general people as well as clients of the bank can collect new notes from the counters of all branches of Bangladesh Bank across the country.

Additionally, the notes will be disbursed from 20 counters of 19 commercial banks in the capital, sources added.

Sources said this year, a person will be allowed a one-time collection of notes up to a maximum of Tk18,000, but that Bangladesh Bank coin counters will supply coins as per requirement from clients to meet the additional demand of the people.

Moreover, fingerprint scanners will be used to record the biometric data of the collectors of the notes to prevent misuse by seasonal businesses.

Contacted, Debashish Chakraborty, an executive director and spokesperson for Bangladesh Bank told the Dhaka Tribune: “We release new notes before every Eid, as having new notes has become a fashion nowadays.”

However, he could not confirm how many new notes would be issued in total this year to replace the old notes that have been collected.

“The amount will be finalized by today or tomorrow,” he added.
