Five top officials of Islami Bank Ltd have been removed from their posts.
However, the bank authorities claimed that they were “not removed, rather they voluntarily resigned.”
The officials are Additional Managing Director Md Shamsuzzaman, Deputy Managing Directors Md Habibur Rahman Bhuiyan, Abdus Sadek Bhuiyan and Md Mohon Miah, and Senior Executive Vice-president Amirul Islam.
Of them, two including Shamsuzzaman had “resigned” on Tuesday, while the rest “resigned” on Thursday, according to the bank authorities.
“I have accepted resignation letters from five officials. They voluntarily resigned. No one put pressure on them to leave,” claimed Islami Bank Ltd Chairman Arastoo Khan.
Last year, the board of the private bank appointed former bureaucrat Arastoo as its new chairman and made changes in key positions, a move which was aimed at freeing the Shariah-based bank from what stakeholders described as the clutch of Jamaat-e-Islami.
Sources at the bank said Thursday’s reshuffle in the positions was part that move.
