The interbank rate for dollars rose from Tk108 to Tk108.5 within a week, making it the highest in the country's history.
The interbank exchange rate refers to the price at which one bank sells dollars to another bank.
Bangladesh Bank data shows that on Monday, the dollar was traded between its lowest rate of Tk107.26 and its highest rate of Tk108.5.
The dollar rate increased to Tk108 in the interbank exchange earlier on May 7. This was the market's highest dollar exchange rate up until that point.
According to bankers, the rise in remittance rates is the main reason for the increase in the interbank dollar rate.
The remittance dollar rate was raised by Tk1 to Tk108 on April 30 by the Association of Bankers Bangladesh (ABB) and Bangladesh Foreign Exchange Dealers' Association (Bafeda).
