Sugar prices had been bouncing between Tk60 and Tk65 per kg since the beginning of the year, but then prices started rising in August

The price of sugar soared this week despite the government having fixed the rates on Thursday, as the essential commodity sold for Tk82-84 per kg in the kitchen markets of Dhaka.

Sugar prices had been bouncing between Tk60 and Tk65 per kg since the beginning of the year, but then prices started rising in August.

Unpacked sugar price was set at Tk74 per kg by the government on Thursday, while the packaged sugar price was set at Tk75 per kg.

Mohammad Atowar, a shopper at Karwan Bazar, said the sudden rise in price of sugar is a problem for the middle class.

“Since Ramadan, the prices have been rising. Private job holders have fixed income, if prices go up, it is we the common people who suffer,” he said.

“Sugar prices were Tk60-62 earlier, but now it is Tk82-85 per kg,” said an angry tea stall owner Babar Hossain, adding that his profits have taken a big hit due to the sugar price hike.

Yasin Sarker, a grocer at Kawran Bazar said, there is no shortage of sugar, so it is not exactly clear why suppliers are increasing prices.

“The government has fixed sugar prices but it will take some time to effect. We are selling sugar per kg Tk82-84,” said Emdadul Haque, a grocer at the Hatirpool kitchen market.

He also hinted that in the coming weeks sugar prices may attain stability but edible oil prices could go up by Tk10-12.

Earlier, the Commerce Ministry revised soybean oil prices by Tk4 per litre, based on prices in the international market.

Although, bottled soybean oil is being sold at Tk153 per litre at the kitchen markets, a five-litre bottle is being sold at Tk680-715. Meanwhile, loose soybean or palm oil sold for Tk145 per litre as of Saturday.

Jewel Hossain Munshi, a grocer at Karwan Bazar, said five-litre bottle of Fresh Soyabean oil was selling for Tk712, Rupchanda for Tk718, and Teer for Tk708.

Vegetable prices remained stable in the market, with most products available at Tk60 to Tk65 per kg.

But chicken prices have gone up due to higher demand amid reopening of hotels and restaurants.

Broiler chicken cost Tk140-150 per kg — a 12.5% rise compared to last month.

Meanwhile, Sonali Pakistani chicken cost Tk210 to Tk230 per kg, and local chicken was being sold at Tk420 to Tk480 per kg.

Beef was being sold at Tk580-600 per kg on Saturday, while mutton cost Tk800-850 per kg.

Besides, broiler eggs per dozen were being sold at Tk110, up from Tk105 last week.

Turmeric prices went down from Tk200-220 per kg last week to Tk180-200.

Rubel Hossain, who sells rice at Karwan Bazar, said prices have remained stable.
