At least 590,000 mobile phone subscribers were off the total subscriber grid in Bangladesh in April this year, dropping the total count to 174.1 million from 174.6 million in March.

This puts a brake on the upward surge in new subscribers across the country amid the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. In March, mobile subscribers had increased by 1,273,000.

The subscribers were users of Grameenphone, Robi and Banglalink.

Robi Axiata lost the most subscribers - 290,000 - dropping the number of its subscribers to 51.65 million from 51.94 million in March.

Followed in second was Grameenphone, who lost 240,000 subscribers in the month of April, taking their tally to 80.51 million, from 80.75 million in March.

Banglalink also lost 60,000 subscribers in a month. Now its subscriber base is 36.15 million.

However, state-owned Teletalk fared well during the same period, welcoming 60,000 new subscribers to its network. Its total mobile subscriber base now stands at 5.75 million.

Besides, 710,000 internet subscribers were also off the total internet subscriber base in April, bringing the new tally to 115.4 million, down from 116.1 million in March, according to Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) data.

Mobile internet subscribers also decreased to 105.62 million from 106.33 million, with subscribers of internet service providers (ISPs) and public switched telephone numbers (PSTN) remaining unchanged at 9.81 million.

March witnessed a surge in mobile internet users, up by nearly 3.14 million.

Mobile operators said as many people moved to their hometowns from major cities during the Eid-ul-Fitr holidays, the number of active subscribers and mobile data users declined.

Taimur Rahman, chief corporate and regulatory affairs officer at Banglalink, said: "Due to the extension of pandemic-induced lockdowns, the customer base shrunk. We believe and hope that the number will go up as people have started coming back and the current pandemic situation is improving gradually."
