The telecom operator reconfirmed its commitment as a partner and enabler to Bangladesh’s growth and digitalisation journey

Leading mobile network operator Grameenphone (GP) on Sunday announced the transition of 15,500 of its mobile towers across the country as 4G-enabled, to commemorate Bangladesh's 50th anniversary and reaffirming its commitment to unleash digital potential in every corner of the country.

With nationwide 4G coverage, new tower roll-out, and preparations to deploy an additional 10.4 MHz spectrum, the company is positioned to meet people’s growing need for high-speed internet and support digital services uptake in rural and urban areas for its 80 million customers and beyond.

The declaration was made at an event in the capital with Posts and Telecommunication Minister Mustafa Jabbar as chief guest.

Among others, Subrata Roy Maitra, vice chairman of Bangladesh Telecom Regulatory Commission (BTRC), was present as special guest, along with GP CEO Yasir Azman, CFO Jens Becker, and CMO Mohammad Sajjad Hasib.

Some 24 years ago, GP embarked on a journey of providing mobile connectivity for all people of Bangladesh.

With the announcement, the telecom operator reconfirmed its commitment as a partner and enabler to Bangladesh’s growth and digitalisation journey, said the organisers through a press release.

“I have continuously emphasized the necessity of nationwide 4G coverage so that the common person in the remotest area may become a part of the Digital Bangladesh vision. One may live without a day's meal, but not without the internet these days," said Mustafa Jabbar.

The progress of the future depends on digitalisation. In this case, private companies must come ahead for the digital development as only depending on the telecom sector for digitalisation is not possible, the minister also said.

Introducing 5G does not mean to stop progress of 4G. 4G will remain a milestone in the telecommunication industry. The necessity of the internet is everywhere where 4G is needed, while 5G will be needed for special issues and work and for special industries, he added.

"We look forward to working together and collaborating further to ensure high-quality service for our customers, supporting Bangladesh’s national digitalization and development agenda," said Yasir Azman, GP CEO.

"We are now further committed to ensuring the quality of service for all mobile phone subscribers and contributing to their digitalization and communications needs," said Subrata Roy Maitra, vice chairman of Bangladesh Telecom Regulatory Commission (BTRC).

"With expansion of our 4G coverage in every corner of Bangladesh, we step forward, unleashing the possibilities of millions all across Bangladesh through ensuring access to digital services, SME based solutions and education platforms," said GP CFO Jens Becker.

During the event, Mohammad Sajjad Hasib, CMO of GP, made live calls to community representatives in multiple remote locations and shared the joyous moment, and celebrated 4G connectivity with them.
