Legendary marketing personality Syed Alamgir has recently joined as the managing director and chief executive officer of Akij Ventures and its subsidiary, Akij Food and Beverage.

ACI is now well-established. On the other hand, Akij Ventures wants to invest in many new sectors. That is why I made the switch, he told Dhaka Tribune yesterday.

“We want to give more quality products to the customers. That is why I want to work here. Akij Group is also interested in making big investments,” he also said.

Alamgir is highly regarded for his contribution and success in the marketing arena, both in Bangladesh and internationally.

He is especially known for pioneering the ideology of Halal products. His marketing proposition of a 100 per cent Halal soap was instantly acclaimed during its release.

“I introduced the concept and achieved a 14 per cent market share in the very first year, with continued growth over the years,” Alamgir said.

He was previously the managing director of ACI Consumer Brands, ACI Salt, ACI Pure Flour and ACI Foods.

Despite leaving ACI, he still remains as a board member of several other companies including foreign joint ventures of ACI.

Alamgir joined ACI in 1998, and later under his helm became one of the fast-growing consumer goods companies in Bangladesh. Many of the retail initiatives he undertook, such as soap, edible oil, salt, mosquito coil, insect spray, and antiseptics became market leaders in Bangladesh.

"When I was a marketing director of Jamuna Group of Companies, we launched and successfully managed new business ventures like Pegasus Shoes, Jamuna Welding Electrode, Jamuna Knitting and Dyeing. and Aromatic Cosmetics. Pegasus shoes were able to achieve the number two position after Bata in only two years' time,” he further said.

The Akij Ventures MD began his career with May & Baker, a British pharmaceutical company, soon after finishing his studies from the Institute of Business Administration of Dhaka University.

He joined Jamuna Group in 1992 as group marketing director and worked there until 1998.

There should be no deficiency in product quality. The company's reputation should not be ruined in the lure of quick business. Products should have unique features. An innovative marketing strategy is imperative to attract the consumers’ attention, he said.

"On the other hand, the product distribution channel needs to be strong. Our product can be found in any part of Bangladesh," he added.

Currently, Akij Group is one of the largest industrial conglomerates in Bangladesh and consists of 24 subsidiaries. Its history dates back to 1950 and employs more than 35,000 people.

Akij Venture has sought 307 acres of land at the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Shilpa Nagar (BSMSN) in Chittagong to accommodate the project, which includes a private port to load and unload goods.

A total of 18 new units would be divided into five industrial sectors: chemical, agribusiness, electrical, food, and beverage.
