Thanks to big corporates like Pran taking a shine to sweet puffed rice balls, the demand for the handmade versions has fallen out of favour with the village crowd
Probodh Kumar and his family have been making sweetpuffed rice balls, a popular Bangladeshi snack, for more than 30 years now, which they sell at the village market for Tk 80-85 a kg. But thanks to big corporates like Pran taking a shine to this segment, the demand for Kumar’s handmade balls has fallen out of favour with the village crowd, who now prefer the cheaper and packaged versions sold by the companies. What the family earns now enables them to just about get by. The photos were taken from Mukhtarpur, Munshiganj recently.
