When they arrived at the factory, they were told by the management only to sign their attendance and leave, not giving any information about payment of wages
Workers of an apparel factory in Narayanganj on Tuesday blocked the Katherpool area for five hours, demanding that factory management clear their wages.
At one point they also blocked the Dhaka-Narayanganj Link Road for an hour, from 9:00am till 10:00am.
Citing workers of Time Sweaters Ltd, Aslam Hossain, officer-in-charge of Fatullah Model Police Station, said over 1,000 workers of the factory were promised that their wages for March would be provided by April 7 (Tuesday).
"But when they arrived at the factory, they were told by the management only to sign their attendance and leave, not giving any information about payment of wages," he said.
Aslam added that despite the government directives to keep all factories closed from March 26, workers of the factory were ordered to be at work every working day and put their attendance on record. They were also warned that those who did not sign would have wages deducted as penalty.
This agitated the workers and they went on to demonstrate in front of the factory, blocking the Katherpool area from 8:00am till 1:00pm.
The demonstration ended when factory management assured workers that their wages would all be cleared by April 16.
