VAT Day observed
National Board of Revenue (NBR) on National VAT Day awarded 144 businesses in different categories for their highest VAT payments in 2017-18 fiscal.
Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal handed over crests and certificates to the representatives of the firms on Tuesday at a program at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre (BICC) in the capital.
The revenue board members Sultan Md Iqbal, Abdul Mannan Shikder, Khandaker Muhammad Aminur Rahman and VAT officials were present in the event, among others.
Of the 144 entities, nine businesses got the highest VAT awards at national level and the rest 135 from district levels.
Square Formulations Ltd, Aristopharma Ltd and Rashidpur Condensate Fractionation Plant got the VAT awards at the national level in production category, while Hamco Corporation Ltd, SC Johnson Pvt Ltd and Siemens Health Care Ltd received awards in trade category and Chittagong Warehouse Ltd, Qatar Airways and Thai Airways in service category.
Two to three business entities awarded from district levels in production, service and trade categories.
Berger Paints, Sincon Enterprise, Fiber at Home got the awards from Dhaka district, while SMC Enterprise, Gopal Pal Mondar Dokan got from Mymensingh, Banaful and Co, Brac Aarong, Chowdhury Tea Warehouses from Chittagong, Nitol Niloy Filter Industries, Walton Plaza, Nanking Chinese Restaurant from Rajshahi, Sheltech Technology, Transcom Foods from Sylhet, Olympic Cement Industries, Asian Paints, Green Line Waterways from Barishal, Safe and Save, Khorshed Metal, City Industries from Khulna, Waltan Plaza, RDRS Guest House from Rangpur district.
Besides, Popular Pharmaceuticals, Akij Biri Factories, Olympic Industries, RFL electronics, Nippon Paints, Ispahani Tea, Haque Chemicals, Sundarban Couriers were mentionable, among others, which got awards from district levels in the three categories.
NBR Chairman Md Mosharraf Hossain Bhuiyan in the VAT Day inauguration program said the NBR would go tougher in case of ensuring VAT registration and VAT payments.
“All the registration-eligible businesses will be brought under the VAT net soon,” said Mosharraf, adding that many of the businesses did not have registration yet, which was one kind of offence.
“Legal actions will be taken if the businesspeople do not pay the VAT on time,” he warned.
Meanwhile, the NBR observed the national value added tax (VAT) Day on Tuesday across the country.
NBR Chairman Md Mosharraf Hossain Bhuiyan inaugurated a festival to mark the day and VAT Week early morning on the day at the NBR office in the capital.
Businesspeople paid VAT in a hassle-free environment during the VAT week to be continued till December 15.
Marking VAT Day and VAT Week, President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina issued separate messages and thanked consumers and revenue officials for their contributions to VAT.
All the VAT offices across the country and the NBR offices have been decorated with colorful banners and festoons.
A procession from the NBR office marched to Rajmoni Cinema Hall and Matsya Bhaban.
People from different groups, VAT officials and celebrities joined the program, holding banners, festoons, placards and posters on the occasion.
Actors Mosharraf Karim, Fazlur Rahman Babu, singer Ferdous Ara and Mehrin attended the event among other celebrities.
The revenue board earlier arranged an essay writing competition on VAT and awarded the winners on the day.
