Importers, traders blame Indian uncontrolled market
Prices of cardamom and cinnamon have shot up in local kitchen markets when people have not yet overcome the shock of the abnormal price hikes of onion and rice.
Visiting kitchen markets at Malibagh, Rampura, Karwan Bazar, and Mohammadpur (Mohammadpur Krishi Market) in the capital on Monday, cardamom was found selling at prices higher by Tk1200 to 1600 a kg, an around 67% increase.
Besides, the prices of cinnamon also increased.
On Monday, cardamom sold at Tk3,400 to Tk4,000 in retail markets, depending on the size and quality, which was Tk2,400-2,800 a kg a week ago.
In wholesale market, the spice was selling at Tk3,000-3500 a kg, a robust increase from Tk1,850 to Tk2,400 a kg a week ago.
The prices of cinnamon also increased by Tk50-60 a kg.
Cinnamon was selling at Tk400-420 a kg in retail kitchen markets, up from Tk340-350 a kg a week earlier.
In the city’s wholesale markers, the produce was selling at Tk380 a kg on Monday, which was Tk320-330 a kg a week earlier.
