Tax return submission ends today
Income Tax Day-2019 was observed on Saturday across the country, aimed at raising awareness about income tax and encouraging people to pay taxes regularly.
National Board Revenue (NBR) Chairman Md Mosharraf Hossain Bhuiyan inaugurated the festivities by releasing pigeons and balloons in front of the NBR office in the capital.
A rally was also organized from the NBR office, covering Matsya Bhaban, Supreme Court, and National Press Club areas.
People from different socio-economic classes, tax officials and celebrities attended the rally, holding banners, festoons, placards and posters of the tax day.
Actors Enamul Haque, Reaz, Omar Sani, Jahid Hasan, Chanchal Chowdhury, actresses Mousumi, Opu Bishwas, Barsha, singer Kumar Bishwajit and SD Rubel were also present at the rally, among other celebrities.
The NBR chairman said only 1% of the people were paying taxes currently, which was lower compared to other developing countries.
Mentioning that the tendency of evading tax was not a matter of pride, Mosharraf said the country must increase tax to GDP ratio for sustainable development.
He urged all capable people to pay taxes regularly for the country's development.
The celebrities said they were also paying taxes regularly, as tax payment was a mandatory duty of the country's responsible citizens. They urged the people to do the same as well.
They, however, requested the NBR officials to ensure hassle-free environment for taxpayers.
Similar rallies were also organized in all the divisional headquarters, while mobile messages were sent to citizens for raising awareness on paying taxes.
President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina issued separate messages marking the day.
Tax returns submission ends today
The NBR extended a day for tax return submission, as the previously-set deadline was Saturday (November 30), a weekly holiday.
In a directive last week, the exchequer asked its field offices to accept tax returns from taxpayers today (December 1).
Officially, November 30 is the deadline for submission of income tax statements for a fiscal year. Taxpayers have to pay penalty if they submit tax returns after the deadline, as dictated by law.
