PM, finance minister submit tax returns at tax fair

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Finance Minster AHM Mustafa Kamal submitted their tax returns on the first day of the nation-wide income tax fair that began on Thursday.

On behalf of the prime minister, former Finance Secretary Siddiqur Rahman Choudhury handed over the return to Md Mosharraf Hossain Bhuiyan, the chairman of the National Board of Revenue (NBR).

The NBR, however, did not disclose the tax amount paid by Sheikh Hasina.

Meanwhile, Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal paid Tk7.06 crore in tax this year on his family income amounting to Tk221.75 crore, including those of his wife and two daughters. Of this paid amount, Tk91.46 lakh was paid on Kamal's personal income of Tk23.63 crore.

Kamal said, his yearly income decreased a bit compared to last year. However, the finance minister did not mention any reason behind the fall in income.

Besides, the NBR received Tk25 crore from the former Minister Syed Abul Hossain on the first day of the tax fair. 

Apart from the individual taxpayers, two companies, Grameen Phone and Islami Bank Bangladesh Limited, paid corporate taxes at the fair. Grameen Phone paid Tk150 crore, while Islami Bank paid Tk100 crore in corporate taxes.

The week-long tax-fair in Dhaka will continue till November 20, while tax fairs at the district levels will run for four days.
