The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission is planning to establish regional offices in every divisional headquarters to expand regulatory oversight in telecom sector.

BTRC officials said a proposal in the connection was placed for approval of the Post and Telecommunication Ministry.

According to the proposal, 40 personnel would be appointed for regional offices in Dhaka, Chittagong, Khulna, Sylhet, Rajshahi, Barisal, Rangpur and Mymensingh.

The divisional office would be headed by a director ranking officer and the office will have two deputy directors and six senior assistant directors ranking officers.

"The telecom and its related services are expanding rapidly. In order to cope up with that we are planning to increase the regulatory oversight," BTRC Chairman Jhairul Haque told Dhaka Tribune.

He said it was difficult for the officers to travel outside Dhaka frequently to resolve various issues.

"To increase the service level of the mobile phone users, the divisional offices would be very helpful," he added.

BTRC started its operation in 2002 with 41 personnel, which was increased to 369 in 2008. Currently the total number of BTRC personnel is 455.

The BTRC currently deals 3,151 licensees in 30 different categories. The total number of mobile phone users as of August was  16.25 crore and that of internet users  9.81 crore.
